special edition   MLB 2021 postseason

through the World Series

TBAR/PAs (total bases advanced or relinquished per plate appearance)

Following this year’s two seven-game league championship series, the fourth and final round of the postseason has continued with the best-of-seven-game World Series being played.   The 2021 pennant winners in each of the big leagues played in the 117th World Series.   For the fourth time in the team’s history (and the second since moving to its current hometown in 1966), the Atlanta Braves—the oldest continuously playing big-league baseball team in existence—championed the National League; founded in 1871, it is one of only two remaining original charter members of the league from when it was begun in 1876—the other being the Chicago Cubs (the oldest major professional sports team in North America still in existence, who were founded in 1870 but were unable to play in the 1872 or ’73 seasons due to the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire).   And for the third time in the last five years, the Houston Astros would champion the American league—this being the fifth year in a row that either they or the Los Angeles Dodgers would play, beginning when the two teams were opponents in the 2017 series.   32 players—15 Braves and 17 Astros—had at least one plate appearance (or virtual plate appearance, in the case of pinch runners who, in addition to the actual batters, were also attributed with TBAR: total bases advanced or relinquished).

There are 16 among them—eight Braves and eight Astros—who made more than 39 appearances in the series comprising the last three of the four rounds, along with an additional 11—seven AL players and four NL players—whose teams did not win their league pennant but who each had 40 or more PAs in one of the wild card games and the division and league championship series alone.   We here look at the TBAR/PA (total bases advanced or relinquished per plate appearance) of each of these players with at least 40 PAs in the series or in a wild card game and the series.
