Streaks (and Blips)

a supplement to

Keeping the Line Moving—Total Bases Advanced or Relinquished
a Measure of Offensive Production

by  Fred Krumbein

We look on a winning streak as being a stretch of at least three series in a row, in which the team wins all of those series.   And a losing streak we think of as being a stretch of at least three series in a row, in which the team loses all of those series.   We take a splitting streak to be a stretch of at least three series in a row, either: in which, other than split series, the team goes back and forth, following each win with a loss or each loss with a win, or in which the tally of won and lost games is equal or approximately equal.   We consider a blip to be any stretch that we do not perceive to exhibit one of these patterns.
