The Endless Parades

a supplement to

A People Who Thought They Could Govern Themselves
Prescriptions for an Ailing Body Politic

by  Peter Coyote

The citizenry taking control over its own airwaves would certainly contribute to less opinion-heavy soliloquies between anchors and guests who appear to be contestants in rapid-speech contests and whose opinions are never tracked for accuracy or outcomes and who are never graded or held to account for the accuracy of their predictions and opinions.

Instead we have an endless parade of talking heads, all of whom have done extremely well in this monetized system, presented to us as the sole experts on any given topic.

The endless political minutiae reported by our national news media may fill corporate coffers, but they offer voters precious little besides personality, the drama of the horse race, and hyperbolic analysis of candidates’ strategies for winning as opposed to their policies for governing.
