Snobbery versus Listening Pleasure
Impressions of a 1970 Luiz Bonfá Classic

by  Oliver Bills

Snobbery versus listening pleasure.   I vote for making love to the tunes.   Let them carry you as far as the wind will blow.   Luiz Bonfá earned his place in mid-century Brazilian music.

The New Face of Bonfá from 1970 shows an artist relaxed, mature, and in a giving mood.   This music is a perfect cocktail.   Never intending to challenge you or discomfort you.   It is an invitation to memory, imagination, and equilibrium.

Sit back and let saudade wash over you.

The Tunes

1.   Window Girl

Yellow.   Orange.   Meyer lemon.   Yuzu and bourbon.

2.   For a Distant Love

Departing flight.   Returning flight.   No one waiting at the curb.   Traffic is light in to town.   You buy flowers for yourself.   You make a grand marnier soufflé.   It turns out fine.

3.   Macumba

Black pants.   Black turtleneck.   Black 1971 Porsche 911.   Gothic beach day.   Italian shades.   Paint it black.

4.   Africana

We are family.   The Pointer Sisters threw you a picnic.   It’s Carnaval.   The sun is setting and things are just revving up.

5.   Salvador

Steve McQueen and Grace Jones laughing together.

6.   Medieval

The backstreets of Lisbon.   October sun.   You hear languid west African music.   You decide to move to Mexico.

7.   Helicopter 274

Trade winds.   An art student in a fallow field dreaming up their next project.   This song is an empty canvas for any daydream.

8.   Man Alone

This song epitomizes the power of Brazilian instrumental music.   It is both melancholic and optimistic.   Your money is gone.   The party is over.   But you still feel lovely and buoyant.

9.   Sofisticada

Spiritual beach vibes.   The ocean is a seance, and your ancestors wash in and wash out.   You raise a gin martini to your ancestors.   You feel your mother and father, the sun and the sea.

10.   Savanarole

A slow ride on a 1972 Schwinn tricycle.   You have melons and tequila.   Somehow those objects will become one.

11.   Peixe Bom

Your dinner party is buzzed.   The food was fine.   You look in the cabinet.   You still have wine.

Go find this album, and you can thank me later.
